Thread: LAN Downunder 2024 Update
mitch LAN Downunder & Summer Brawl staff

It’s that time again, and we’ve got some very exciting updates for this year’s LAN. Every year we try to grow and improve the event and this year we have probably the biggest changes we’ve ever had.

VENUE

We are very excited to announce a new potential venue for this year’s LAN. For years we have had our eyes on Fortress as a dream venue, and this year we have been given a unique opportunity to work with them. With Fortress we can provide a better experience for players and spectators, and we can hold a bigger and better LAN.

In trying to reach out to small communities like ours, Fortress has developed a grassroots initiative. This means that we can afford to hold our event there without having to pay full price for the hire, and we can avoid passing the cost on to the spectators and players. We are still working out finer details with them - and we cannot wait to provide you all with updates as they come in.

QUALIFIERS

The Alienware Arena has a reduced capacity for players as an events venue rather than an internet cafe, which means we’ve had to make some tough decisions regarding tournament structure. In making these decisions, we’ve considered what will be best for both players and for spectators, and how to make this process as fair as possible.

The first and second place team from LDU 2023 will be invited again to compete in 2024, automatically qualifying. All other teams wanting to compete at Fortress will have to play for their spot in online qualifiers before LAN. If any invited teams do not accept their place, the next team from qualifiers will be invited.

While we understand this is a significant change from previous years, this is the solution we have decided on to ensure the best LAN possible. Anyone who doesn’t play though should not be disheartened because this LAN will still have a lot to offer! Registrations for the Qualifier is open now on ozfortress, and will close Sunday the 12th of May at 11:59PM AEST.

SPECTATORS

This year we want to put a bigger focus on the spectator experience. As we will have a reduced number of teams, it’s important to us that everyone will still have the best time possible at the event. This means we have big things in the works - games, prizes, interviews and more. Not to mention that Fortress has food and drinks on site, which we can enjoy during LAN (RESPONSIBLY).

There has never been a better time to be a spectator at LDU, and we are excited to make it all about you guys.

WHAT’S NEXT

While we organise all the finer details and confirm everything for July, you guys can start forming those teams and practicing for qualifiers. We will be providing updates as we get them, as we know there is still a lot to determine. I’m sure there will be questions so feel free to pop them in #lanfortress on Discord!

The LAN Downunder 2022 Poster

It's finally here (touch wood). After two years of chaos TF2 finally returns to LAN and so does the LAN Downunder 2022!

LAN is an opportunity to put names to faces and create new friendships. It's also an opportunity for some intense 5 ping Team Fortress 2 action, broadcasted with a live audience! LDU 2022 will be held on the Saturday 2nd & Sunday 3rd July 2022, returning to the GIC Esports Arena in Melbourne. Thanks to our new partnership with Marketplace.tf and continued support of Qixalite, we now have a confirmed prize pool of $2,000 AUD!

This year, all attendees must have received at least two doses of an Australian Government approved COVID-19 vaccine prior to entry. Checks will be done at the door and anyone who does not have proof will not be able to enter. Please check the Services Australia page for more information on valid proof of vaccination. At this time masks are not required but this is subject to change pending future outbreaks.

The LAN Downunder have teamed up with ozfortress to utilise their tournament system. On the ozfortress website, captains can create Teams using the "Start Team" button on the Teams page. Once created, captains can invite players to the team. Team invites are shown on a player's profile, which can be accessed by clicking on your name next to the bell on the top right-hand corner of your screen. Teams provide a pool of players that can be signed up for a tournament. Players may be in the pool for multiple teams but only one active roster for any given tournament. Captains may sign up a roster for tournaments under the league page.

If you're new and not sure how to get started, don't fret! Check out the #recruitment section of the ozfortress Discord where you can express your interest in joining a team, or peruse potential players to form a team of your own. Teams are normally comprised of one Medic, one Demoman, two Soldiers and two Scouts. If you're new to the competitive scene, click here for an introduction to ozfortress!

Once you've signed up your team or have joined one, you must purchase a Player ticket. If you do not you will be removed from the roster at the closing of sign-ups. Players will receive access to 1 PC & monitor, as well as a keyboard, mouse and headset. You are welcome to bring your own peripherals however we do not have the equipment or space for BYOC. Players must prepare a USB with their HUD and config so that it can be uploaded to the PC quickly. PC's reset at the end of each day so this is crucial.

Spectators also need to purchase a ticket to maintain safe capacity in the venue. Spectators will be given access to all player floors as well as a viewing area of the broadcast. Drinks and snacks are also available for sale at the kiosk.

In cooperation with ozfortress, we've now added an Offline specific section to the ozfortress ruleset. Please take some time to have a read of them so you are ready for the day. The schedule is available here, times are subject to change based on registrations.

For more information check our FAQ or join our Discord. Sign ups are open now and will remain open until Sunday the 19th of June at 23:59 AEST. This will give the administration team time to check capacity with the venue and prepare the tournament. Don't miss out on this opportunity to play on LAN!
